Ilinden

Ilinden - Saint Elijah’s Day
Eternal for all Macedonians.
One of the most significant day on the Macedonian Orthodox Christian calendar.

A symbol for Macedonian’s who fought for FREEDOM and wanting to attain a FREE and INDEPENDENT MACEDONIA.

The main goal was to defend the right to identify as a Macedonian, protect our beloved Macedonian language and culture and especially to assert our right to exist with all people who reside on this EARTH!

The Ilinden Uprising

The Ilinden Uprising started on the 2nd August 1903 across all of Macedonia. The revolution had begun and was announced by ringing church bells in Krushevo.
Fighting had occurred all around within towns of Macedonia. Bitola, Ohrid, Kichevo, Lerin and Prilep to name a few. During the uprising, the towns of Nevska, Krushevo and Klisura had been seized by the revolutionaries, we know them as “Komiti”

Ilinden Uprising Freedom or Death The Macedonian Oath

On August 3rd 1903, the Komiti had established a revolutionary goverment and proclaimed it as Krushevo Republic. The president elected was Nikola Karev.
History states also, that this was the first ever republic proclaimed in the Balkans.
The goal of the Ilinden Uprising was for an Independent Macedonia. A Macedonia for the Macedonians!
Though the republic had only lasted for 10 days, in which had been viciously crushed by the Ottomans.
Unlike our “neighbours” who had assistance from external European powers in their wars of independence against the Ottomans which resulted the current present of Macedonia

THE BALKAN WARS - 1912 - 1913

(The Treaty of Bucharest)

This war inflicted upon Macedonia, a deeper and further suffering on Macedonians. The Treaty of Bucharest (10th August 1913), amongst four countries, had agreed upon the division of Macedonia.

This treaty had denied Macedonians to their own state and in turn denied the rights and existence of Macedonian people within the borders of the occupying countries, them being Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria. The Macedonian people were abandoned, punished and ethnically cleansed and forced to assimilate within their newly acquired territories. If not, DEATH or EXILE would be their fate.
Greece seized the biggest, southern part of Macedonia (Aegean), Serbia won the central (current Republic of Macedonia) – Vardar region and Eastern part (Pirin) was given to Bulgaria.

World War II - Second Ilinden Uprising

In the final stages of World War II and against the Fascist powers in 1944, the Macedonian partisans gathered the first complete session of the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) in Sveti Prohor Pchinski Monastery.

This assembly had a very symbolic date of the 2nd of August, that of which 41 years prior the Ilinden Uprising had begun on the same date.
This meeting followed and had confirmed a legal and fully developed Macedonian state in the frames of a communist Yugoslav federation.

Members within ASNOM had elected its first President, Metodija Andonov Chento (pictured to the left) of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia. The first session had seen several documents which were of a constitutional importance, most relevant a proclamation for the creation of a Macedonian nation for the Macedonians and the Macedonian language recognised as its official language.
